BUCS British Student Korfball

BUCS (British Universities & College Sport) is the pinnacle of sporting achievement in the world of higher education, with teams up and down the whole of Britain battling to earn points for their university. Many university unions allocate funding based on BUCS results, so the competition is fierce. Four of the eight universities within Wales currently have korfball clubs which compete in BUCS: Aberystwyth University, Cardiff Metropolitan University, Cardiff University, and Swansea University.

The BSKA (British Student Korfball Association) has organised National Championships since 1991, the year Cardiff University was founded. As student korfball spread, they introduced a qualifying round which split North and South; this was closely followed by Club Championships for teams which did not qualify for the main event. The start of the 2014 season saw the biggest shake-up in the history of student korfball, with the introduction of three National BUCS events, four Regional qualifiers, and eight Preliminaries.

Club Championships and Southerns had only existed prior to the 2014/15 season; whereas National Trophy (Tier 2) and National Shield (Tier 3), plus the qualifying rounds of Regionals and Preliminaries, were introduced from then onwards. The BSKA has, from the 2017-18 season, re-introduced Northerns & Southerns as Secondary qualifying rounds to determine the final participants of BUCS National Shield (Tier 3), with the teams failing to progress from Preliminaries taking part.
